Midway to release game with John Woo movie

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Midway Games Inc. said on Wednesday it will release an upcoming action game made in collaboration with action film director John Woo in a special version for Sony Corp. that includes a high-definition copy of one of Woo's movies.

The collector's edition of Midway's “Stranglehold” will take advantage of Sony's Blu-ray technology that stores about five times more data than regular DVDs, allowing more content to fit on a single disc.

Sony is counting on Blu-ray to help drive sales of the console, which faces competition from Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 and Nintendo Co. Ltd.'s Wii.

The special edition of “Stranglehold” will include “Hard Boiled”, Woo's 1992 classic film starring Chow Yun-Fat as a Hong Kong detective. Its slow-motion scene of Chow blasting away with a pistol in each hand inspired homages in movies such as “The Matrix” and in video games like “Max Payne.”

“Stranglehold” was written as a sequel to “Hard Boiled” and Midway said Woo has been involved in the storyline and reviewing progress of the game's creation. The game is expected to be released this summer.

Spiderman 3 Review

Spider-Man 3 marks the fourth game from developer Treyarch to feature Marvel's popular web-slinging superhero. So with Spider-Man 3 being the first game in the series to hit the current generation of consoles, you might expect something of a leap forward for the franchise--something to really wow Spider-Man fans and take the series in a new and exciting direction. No such luck, it seems. Spider-Man 3 is a lot like the last couple of Spider-Man games. Sure, it throws in a few new wrinkles to the combat system and adds some crazy God of War-esque contextual actions into the mix, but the core game is functionally the same as previous Spider-Man games, and the changes are a mixture of positive and problematic. Spider-Man 3 isn't altogether bad, but it has enough issues to prevent it from being wholly recommendable.

Spider-Man 3 ties itself into the new Spidey film by including some of the key story arcs from the movie. You'll see Peter Parker get his black suit as well as run into villains like Sandman, New Goblin, and Venom. But much like Spider-Man 2, the roster of villains doesn't end there. Scorpion, Lizard, Kingpin, and others all pop up in spots. While it makes sense for the developers to extend the scope of the story beyond that of the film, trouble arises when you realize that the film's plot is practically glossed over. There are 10 individual storylines to play through, but none of them are paced well, nor do they ever build up or deliver enough of a story to pull it all together into one cohesive plot. It's almost like a hastily cobbled together Spider-Man mixtape. You get all the villains, and none of the story exposition. There's about as much character depth and story perspective here as is in the film's trailer.

Grand Theft Auto Trailer Debuts - GTA 4

At first glance, the trailer, titled "Things Will Be Different," shows what appears to be New York City. Landmarks like the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, and the Brooklyn Bridge are all clearly shown in vivid detail, thanks to the new RAGE graphics engine, which was previously used in Rockstar Games Presents Table Tennis.

However, the devil is in the details, and a closer look at the trailer appears to indicate that it is set in a totally revamped version of Liberty City. A ship registered to Liberty City is shown docked at a wharf. A derelict "Liberty Ferry" is shown, as is a skyscraper with the logo "Liberteen" in front of it. During a shot of a Times Square-like plaza, a sign for the Liberty Tree newspaper can be seen, as can a small banner that appears to say "Welcome to Liberty City."

When questioned by GameSpot, a Rockstar rep played coy. "We would like to let the trailer speak for itself," he said. "However, we can confirm that all footage in the trailer 'Things Will Be Different' was captured directly from 720p gameplay running real time in our RAGE engine on a next-gen gaming console." The latter comments make it unclear if the trailer is for the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 version of the game.

One thing that is clearly present in "Things Will Be Different" is the series' traditional wicked humor. Re-creations of various landmarks had parody names, including the MetLife Building, which sports a giant "GetaLife" logo. The Times Square replica contains a movie poster for the fictional film I Slept With Your Mom and a billboard for Top Hooker , an apparent parody of reality show America's Next Top Model . The trailer also shows that several faux brands from San Andreas will return, including Sprunk, Cluckin' Bell Chicken, and BurgerShot.

Little Big Planet

LittleBigPlanet is a promising new idea that works as a showcase for the new console. The visual elements coupled with the gameplay and the impressive amount of customization and online support are intriguing. We're curious as to the kind of structure the game is going to have, how much "game" will be in there out of the gate, and how much will rely on the user's imagination. Still, there's a lot of potential here for some cool stuff that we're excited to see realized. According to Harrison, LittleBigPlanet will be available for download later this year on the PSN and on disc in 2008. Look for more on the game in the coming months.

PS3 Home

SAN FRANCISCO--Imagine a three-dimensional avatar-based socializing sim like Second Life. Now cross it with the online gaming and matchmaking features of Xbox Live. Leaven with dynamic streaming in-game advertising a la Massive, throw in some Pogo.com-esque casual gaming, and add a dash of Sneak King-like merchandising. Heat, stir, let cool, serve, and-- voila --you've got Home, the new online.

Following a flurry of rumors, Sony officially opened Home's doors at a secretive, invite-only event on Tuesday evening at a nightclub near the base of the Bay Bridge. Following the requisite signing of nondisclosure agreements and plying of attendees with high-end nibbles and libations, Sony Worldwide Studios president Phil Harrison took the stage to give a preview of the keynote speech he would deliver the following morning at the 2007 Game Developers Conference.

Using a PowerPoint-like slide show via the cross-media bar, Harrison outlined the concept behind Home, which he called "Game 3.0." As the executive himself freely admitted, the concept is a riff on Web 2.0, the term applied to the new, more interactive and customer-focused services and sites like Pandora, YouTube, and Flickr.

GTA IV trailer this month

Rockstar has revealed we'll get our first look at its next-gen gangland adventure on 29th March, when a trailer for Grand Theft Auto IV will be shown across the Internet horizon.

Rockstar was unable to comment on what exactly we could see in the trailer, though we're sure it will be enough to ruffle Jack Thompson's feathers and make us dribble a little excitement in our news-pants.

Hopefully it will also mark the start of a real campaign for the game kept so rigorously under lock and key. All we know so far is that it will be launched simultaneously on Xbox 360 and PS3 in October, and that exclusive downloadable content will be made available for both systems.

However, it's likely that the game will be built on the same RAGE engine that powered Rockstar's excellent Table Tennis foray last May.

We're also wistfully trying to believe rumours that the action will take place in London this time, marking the series' first 3D foray outside of America. We can but dream of a car-chase through Albert Square, or punching Martin Fowler in the chops outside the Queen Vic.

But other than that, you'll have to wait and see.

Heavenly Sword

Heavenly Sword developer Ninja Theory is generally pleased with the PlayStation 3 but admits it can be "an interesting ride" to develop for.

"The hardware is a bit like a journey into the Marianas trench," said Mike Ball, co-founder of Ninja Theory, speaking to Eurogamer. "There's lots to explore and the deeper you get the more varied the life forms - sometimes horrific, sometimes beautiful."

He added: "Personally I really love the SPUs as they have exceeded our performance expectations and we've got a lot of them to play with."
