Hi, and sorry about this
Hi, um, sorry about this, tbh I am unsure I am even in the right place, feel free to direct me to a more appropriate place if needs be.
I am brand new to PS3, I got my PS3 Slim and 2 bluray movies + remote a few days back, and have been enjoying various aspects of the PS3 so far.
Now, I am BRAND NEW to consoles (bar a PS1 many MANY years ago) so out of touch I am, I am a PC gamer but as I wanted a bluray player + UFC Undisputed, I thought well, ill give a PS3 a go.
So excuse me for being VERY clueless.
I have just got my first game (not Undisputed funnily enough) it is Uncharted 2 - I have a question about settings with this game, my PS3 is plugged in via quality HDMI to my Sony Bravia 40W5500 TV, I have the TV in Game mode, and have made my own personal adjustments to backlight/colour etc etc, I was suprised to see when I launched the game, 720p pop up.
Turns out after reading allot, it seems this is just the way games are. 720. (mostly)
So, my question is what should I be doing? leaving it in 720? or upscaling? I tried upscaling by unchecking 720 on my TV which seemed to force 1080, but it was not that hot, although it seems to remove SOME of the jaggies.
I am perhaps expecting too much? I mean I think Uncharted 2 looks GREAT and so far im enjoying it while trying to get used to a controller instead of mouse/keyboard of course
but tbh I am thinking perhaps I have just been spoiled with my PC? which due to being EXTREMELY high spec, I am used to 1680x1050 with AA etc etc
I would really like to know from people who KNOW PS3 and HDTV, what settings I should use for this game?
I would be VERY greatful for any advice, thanks.

Its native 720p but its displaying at whatever resolution your TV is. I have a 1080p plasma but 720p content is upscaled to 1080p by the TV. If it isn't being upscaled then you'll have black bars around the image.

I dunno if this is right.
On my PS3 menu, my TV is in 1080p, when I load Uncharted 2, it switches to 720p.
And I have no black bars in 720p

Thats because the PS3 XMB is native 1080p. Uncharted is native 720p.

Sorry, I meant I dunno if what YOU had said was right, I know my XMB is 1080p and the game is 720p.
My TV is a 1080p Sony Bravia
40W5500.
If that helps.

Sorry, what is it that you don't understand? If Uncharted was truly displaying at 720p it would be a box in the center of your 1080p screen. Your TV is upscaling it to 1080p (The resolution of the TV)

I will explain what I do not understand.
Say I have a DVD, and I use upscaling, my Sony TV says 1080p - clearly upscaled, as no SD DVD is 1080p.
With me so far?
my Sony XMB as you called it (no idea what that means, I assume the main menu or 'top menu') my TV says it is in resolution 1080p which makes sense as you said it IS 1080p
Uncharted 2, says 720p
I can quite assure you of these 2 things, my TV is in 720, and there are no black borders, see why what ur saying is confusing to me? there ARE 40" 720p TV's I assume right, so, its nto really far fetched my TV is switching to 720 for uncharted?
hmm perhaps I should be more specific about what I do and do not understand..
NOTHING, I understand NOTHING which is why I was hoping to get some advice on what to do, and how ot get the best out of my Uncharted 2 game + my PS3 and my Sony Bravia 1080p HDTV, I have had my TV for a few weeks, and my PS3 a few days.
And until today I have never owned a game for my PS3.
I understand NOTHIIIIING.
How about I rephrase my question.
In fact how about I don't, I don't think I am capable of explaining very well.
OH SHIT NO WAIT a minute.. are you saying u have a TV which CANNOT display at 720? hence why no matter what u feed it, it plays at 1080p ??? hence, unlike me u have had to make NO choices, and not really worried about whats the best config to get the best out of such n such?
I DUNNO im shooting in the DARK here seriously..
quite frankly I think im getting nowhere.
im jst fn confused.
I was just lookin for some tips, like maybe somebody to reply with EXAMPLE
"AH for that game I would goto *** in the PS3 menu and switch it to *** and also make sure you TV has *** turned on/off"
I guess I have flown right over the mark here.

I think 720p is the number of pixels per centimetre. If the game is native to 720 and your telly in 1080p, theni think you lose some definition..

The PS3 is outputting Uncharted 2 at 720p.
The TV is accepting the 720p signal and upscaling it to 1080p.
EVEN if it doesn't say 1080p on the TV.
The TV will tell you what signal it is accepting, not the resolution it is displaying.
I cannot explain that any easier.
A 720p TV would display the image natively, 1080p content on a 720p TV would be downscaled.

most games are made in 720p, leave it at 720p, if you force it to play in 1080p then you will see the render!
