is it the router that keeps disconnecting or the PS3.
download a program called network magic for your PC the bog standard version is free but it comes with a 30 day trial of the full version this can help highlight any problems with in your network.
if I was you I would hard reset my router back to default setting and delete all conection on any devices that connect to it, then re conect them all via a wired connection to the router ensure the every thing works fine with a wired connection and fresh installs, then I would start going wireless once I knew every thing function with wires, if faults develop then, my guess is you are using a router that can not send a signal strang enough to the PS3 thus causing disconnection. you should get a N1 router if that is the case...unless that is what you have.
aslo cordless phones in the house interfere with wifi signals so changing your phones to croded may help too

It's the router that disconnects i.e. the DSL and internet lights go off.

your ISP is either blocking access to the gaming servers...not all ISPs allow you to hook a games console, check with your ISP to see if they allow such access, htey block it as it works in a similar way to P2P software for sharing copyrighted content Kazaa LimeWire etc etc
if your ISP is NOT blocking this type of access i would look at changing your router...sound like it dead or die-ing
also you say when ever you go to plug in your PS3 this occurs...I have to ask why is it A not plugged in permanetly or B connected Wirelessly ?
or do you mean plugged into the mains ?
also looking at the spec of your router...I think thats where your problem lays.
this what I use http://www.ebuyer.com/product/120468
check this page http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/...1-21/ref=nosim
and look at the customer also viewed section for other N1 option

conan apparently it even happens when plugged in to the mains and on stand-by.
I still suspect a faulty wifi card. I know you changed the ps3 but just on the off chance they screwd you around. Have you tried connecting in a friends house with a different ISP?

does the connection drop when connect with a CAT5 cable...if not then yeah I would agree its a faulty wife card with in the PS3....but I don't have that much information to go on.
which is why I asked what he meant by "plug in"
I think my advice was pretty sound considering the information given
to get a proper assessment I would need
to know the router he is currently using as he mention two....what modem he is using....what devices he has connected to it and how (wifi or cat5)...
how often the disconnection occurs... and where the disconnection occurs
he seemed to mention the disconnection occurs between the router and he internet in his last post...hence my view on a faulty router,
any other reason would disconnect the device from the router

Sorry for the confusion, I meant when the PS3 is plugged in at the mains.
I have a Netgear DG834 v4 (though I tried a Belkin to see if that disconnected too). I have no modem because, as I understand it, the Netgear is an ADSL modem as well??? my Ipod touch, Archos 704 and laptop all connect to the router without any problems (they connect via wifi).
Once the PS3 in plugged in to the mains. about 60 secs after, the DSL and Internet lights on the router go (and I can't even browse the internet via the PC). They come back on and it reconnects after about 2-3 mins, only for the same thing to happen a couple of minutes later.
I tried setting up the PS3 via a wired connection but the disconnection still occurred.
Hope this sorts out any confusion.

Then it's deffinetly one of teo thing a screwed wifi card/ LAN connector with in the PS3 or more than likely its a setting on the PS3/ router.
I would download network magic as I mentioned earlier then connect all the devices at the same time it will help highlight a problem.
If it was me having the trouble I would reset my my router back to the default settings and recoonnect everything again, as it does sound like an IP conflict occuring with in the router. have you made the PS3 Ip address static if so you should have made all the other devices static too as your router is set to choose the IP for all other devices and a conflict has occured.
two ways to resolve this....make all Ip addresses static...you do this from each device manually or through the devices web browser managment system.
or you make them all DHCP and make your router give them lifetime certificates....rotating your IP makes you more secure but your router should have hardware firewall and no doubt you will have a software firewall too, so there is no need to keep issueing devices with rotating Ip addresses.

ur wrong bout p2p, cod4 is the only game that uses p2p at the moment and with netgear routers ya can reserve an ip address so no need to give everythin a static ip

I tried restarting the router, giving all devices Static IP's and then reconnecting the PS3. But it didn't solve the problem (also d/l'ed Network Magic and played around with its options)
Here's a log of the router activity when the PS3 was turned on. Maybe it will be more useful to you more technically minded folk!
