Have you tried a lens cleaner yet?

Could be that normal cd's and dvd's dont hold as much information and arent as complex and therefor easier to read.

Give it a go.

yea tried cleaning it with a normal dvd lens cleaner
I emailed this company http://consolerepairsireland.ie/ and they can fix it for 85 euro says it needs the laser block replaced and that it is becoming a common problem with ps3's so think it will be worth the money and i'll have a better chance of getting my own 60g back from them rather than pot luck from sony

I had problems with the Planet Earth Bluray discs ,even the slightest fingerprint on the surface would stop them playing. I use a glass lense cloth to clean my discs.

I can see it being expensive to replace the lense, bummer
