Default Poor HD image quality

Hi.
I'm having trouble getting a decent image when playing games with the ps3 hooked up to an HDTV via an HDMI cable. Whenever I play a game the image appears to be very grainy with very pixelated edges rather than the lovely smooth edges I should be getting.
When using a regular scart cable the image actually looks far better, but it obviously isn't as good as the HD image should be.
Any help would be much appreciated as this is a very frustrating problem.

What HD signal can your TV handle ?? You may have set the PS3 to output
too high a resolution for your TV.....

The other possibility is that your HDMI cable is faulty. (Unlikely but possible)

Try drop your PS3 resolution to 720p and see how it looks....

It can support full HD so there shouldn't really be any problems there. I often have the tv connected to my pc via the HDMI and the picture is very sharp, so the HD does seem to work so I don't think its a problem with either the TV itself or the HDMI cable.
Dropping the resolution didn't seem to help at all.
I just cant understand why the picture isn't as good as it should be, the same thing occurs when I try using an xbox 360.

Well that has me stumped. I take it you've played around with the rest of your
display settings like the super-white and stuff options ?? Pending that
a phone call to sony might sort you out....
