dave turn off the tv and ps3 connect them with the hdmi turn on the tv and the ps3 and it should auto switch, it will say what resolution it will set at, if it says 1080p make sure the tv supports it, ya could try settin it to 1080i and see if it works
to set the resolution go to settins then display settins then video output settins, select hdmi then select custom and put a tick in 720p and 1080i and make sure 1080p is unticked

It still won't work. As soon as I turn them off and reconnect the hdmi, something comes on the screen saying a hdmi is available. Then I press on use the hdmi cable, and it says if it doesn't work, the screen will go blank for 30 seconds. Guess what, my screen goes blank for 30 seconds!!

Did you try selecting hdmi on your tv..on the remote not ps3?
