you can only add friends from the ps3 xmb. if you want to invite a friend you've already added do so by pressing square when in the lobby pre-game (that'll list all your buddies online or offline and IV beside that if they're playing gta) highlight the player you want to invite and press x. in-game I think you use the phone (press up, press x, scroll to invite player etc...) either way you must be join or set up an online game 1st and then you can only invite players already on your buddy list
